potbelly pig named national finalist in contest for wacky name

INDIANTOWN — What do the Notorious B.I.G. and a rural pet here have in common? Their name. Well, sort of.

Piggy Smalls, a roughly 500-pound potbellied pig, is one of 30 finalists in a nationwide competition to find the pet with the wackiest name.

His competition includes a blue-and-white parakeet named Birdie Sanders and a guinea pig named MooMoo Mozzarella.

Piggy Smalls got his name after his owner took inspiration from hip-hop artist Notorious B.I.G., who went by Biggie Smalls, according to his profile on Nationwide Insurance. His owners could not be reached for comment.

The competition features three categories — cats, dogs and exotic pets — with winners in each category announced Tuesday.

The contest is sponsored by Nationwide Insurance. Voting for the wackiest pet name is open until Friday at this link.

The exotic pets category includes rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, a tortoise and a bird.
